How to Create Genealogy Goals in 3 Simple Steps
It’s getting to the end of the year and that means it’s time to start looking at the past year and reflecting on it. How did you do this last year? How can you create genealogy goals for this next year without getting overwhelmed from all of the things you didn’t accomplish this last year?
What Did You Learn from Your Past
First, I want to stress that if you’re going to look at your past year in order to make new goals, that you do so with an eye of love, compassion, and forgiveness instead of with judgment, shame, and guilt. This is very important! I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t make changes in your life by beating yourself up. You make changes by being open to learning. What did you LEARN this last year about yourself and your life? Write it all down! You can be as specific or as vague as you want to be.
Who Do You Want to Be in the Present
Second, this is not about making goals of to do lists or tasks that you want to do in the next year. We’re not there yet. Instead, this goal-making list is about who do you want to BE in the next year? What kind of person do you want to show up as in the next year? Then the list of tasks and actions will come after you decide your BE goals.
For example, I want to be more balanced between my personal genealogy and my business genealogy. This past year I’ve worked hard at building my business. However, that meant that my personal genealogy was put on the backburner for a while. I’m not saying that was good or bad. I’m just saying that now I want to be a more balanced person in both areas. Then I can list the actions that I’ll need to take to accomplish that goal. Such as, I would need to schedule time during each week to work on my personal genealogy.
Here are other examples of genealogy goals. Maybe you want to be a better-organized genealogist, or a better researcher, or have more connections with your extended family. What if you want to learn more about DNA and it’s genealogy benefits. In addition, maybe you want to love your extended family better now that you know about their skeletons in their closets!
How to Move Forward in the Future to Create Genealogy Goals
Third, I’m sure you guys all know this but, accept that the application of your goals will be messy and won’t go as planned. Life has a way of “helping” when we are creating a new direction for our lives. Expect that it will be messy and that’s ok. Life is supposed to be messy! You just need to re-evaluate your goals and see what needs to be fixed.
The goal here is not to beat yourself up for getting off track or whatever. It’s to love yourself and tell yourself to keep trying. I tell myself that imperfect actions toward any goal that I have is better than no action. So just relax and keep trying!
