Why Not Work with a Genealogist?

When she was 8 months pregnant with her second child, they gave her the gift of housecleaning services from Merry Maids cleaning company. I thought that was a genius gift idea at the time!

Have you ever thought about giving a service gift instead of a product gift to yourself or a loved one? Would your loved ones appreciate carpet cleaning, house cleaning, financial planning, life coaching, genealogy coaching, etc for a gift this year? Working with a genealogist is an excellent gift that would be appreciated by many.

What is holding you back from working with a genealogist?

Are you the type of family historian that likes to research on your own? You like to hunt for those documents and feel the thrill when you find an answer to your problem. I understand that completely! I’m the same way when it comes to researching my family genealogy. I want to do it myself!

However, there have been times when I wanted someone to be there to encourage me and tell me that I was on the right path. I wanted them to tell me I was doing my research the correct way. And when I wanted to give up because I was not finding a solution to a specific problem, I wanted them to cheer me on and help me see another path.

This is what having a genealogist by your side does for you. Working with a genealogist helps you quickly see the solutions to your problems and encourage you to do it yourself. Not every genealogist wants to take your hard earned research away from you and do it themselves. Many, like me, just want to be your guide and help you do your own research. Now if you want someone else to do the work for you, then of course genealogists will do it for you. However, that’s not always the end goal.

The plan for working with me

In my business, I want you to choose whether you want me to do the work for you or help you do the work. It could be as simple as walking you through how to set up your Ancestry account. However, it could also be as complicated as helping you research a 4-generation branch of your family tree. The goal is to be there for you when you need me and when you don’t need me I can step in the background. Again, think of me as your coach or guide in this genealogy process.

We will start with a free consultation to determine what you want to focus on. Again, it could be simple or complex. You get to decide. The consultation is also there to help me determine if I can help you. I specialize in American and Scandinavian genealogy. I don’t do German, British, Scottish, or French genealogy. I would love to, but I don’t have the brain capacity for that!

Then we move on to how much time you want to work with me. It could be an hour, 5 hours, or 10 hours. It doesn’t matter. We can still get a lot done no matter the time we have. And at the low cost of just $10 an hour, we can adjust our time according to your budget.

Next, we would come up with a plan for tackling your genealogy problem. I’ve found that small steps lead to better success, then trying to do huge steps. Therefore, we would plan all of the small steps and make goals around those steps. That’s the general process we would use to help you do your genealogy work. It’s a simple process for a reason. It’s because it works!

Working with a genealogist can give you peace of mind! Feeling relief because that genealogy brick wall is finally solved can be a huge motivator for the rest of your genealogy. When you are motivated, you can get a lot more genealogy done! Who wouldn’t want that in my opinion!
