5 Top Danish Websites that I Use and Love!

Hey friends! How’s the summer treating you these days? Has the mid summer blues hit your house yet? Do you here the constant “I’m bored!” in your house? July is tough sometimes because you still have lots of summer still before school starts yet you’ve already done all of your favorite summer activities. Ugh! What is a person to do!

How about genealogy!!! That’s right, Danish genealogy to be exact. How about we talk about my favorite Danish genealogy websites that have helped me, a non-Dane, to find original Danish records. The problem that I’ve had when looking for other websites to help me with my research is that the websites are not user friendly, outdated, and not what I need. So hopefully, this post will help you with real, active, and user friendly websites.

Ancestry.com

Hello! Do I need to explain this one or not? Our Danish immigrant ancestors lived their lives in America and created many American documents because of this. However, it’s not all about American documents. Ancestry also has many Danish databases, in Danish, that may help you in your search. I like to go to the card catalog and type in the word “Denmark” to pull up all of the databases that Ancestry.com has. Some of the databases are just indexes and not original records so be aware of that.

FamilySearch.org

Another major player in the genealogy world! This website has what Ancestry.com has for Danish databases, but it can also pull from the Family History Library catalog located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is where you can get into actual books, microfilms, and microfiches of original Danish records. They also have extensive digitized copies of original records that you can access online.

Another thing that I love about this website is the Wiki pages. I just type in Denmark genealogy and it takes me to everything written about that topic. I can learn about church records, census records, maps, handwriting, feast days, probate records, etc. The Wiki will also help you locate other useful websites.

Danish Demographic Database

The Danish National Archives is where this database comes from. I use this Danish website when searching for census records and church records. It’s originally in Danish, but you can change it to English very easily. I find this database very reliable when it comes to census records.

DanishFamilySearch.com

This is a fabulous, well maintained site to search for all things Danish records. I love using this site mainly for church records, however; you can use it for census records, maps, and some military records. I find this website is not as user friendly as other sites, but I do like their vast collection of records. In the past, I have sat for hours pouring over all of the documents learning what this site has to offer. I’ve literally just clicked on random things to see how detailed this site is. I must say that I’m impressed with the detail. However, it’s also the detail that gets me confused at times when first learning how to use the website. Now that I know how the website works, it’s much easier for me to navigate.

Danish Emigration Archives

This Danish website is amazing for finding emigration records. You can use this website as a supplement to what you find on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. The site holds emigration records up until 1908. Again, this is another reliable source that I use when searching for immigrant ancestors.

I hope this helps you find your Danish ancestors. If you need help in finding your Norwegian ancestors then go here or for you Swedish ancestors then go here for the major websites I use for these countries. Don’t forget to read my other posts about Norwegian websites.

Good luck and happy hunting!
