5 Genealogy TV Shows that I Love

Are you looking for a different genealogy TV show to watch? I’m always on the hunt for these kinds of shows. Do you have a favorite genealogy TV show that you watch religiously? I do! I have several and I want to share some of them with you. So here goes…

Finding Your Roots

I love this show! My husband rolls his eyes when a new season starts because he knows I’m not going to be doing anything else for awhile. You can find this show on PBS with Henry Louis-Gates, Jr. as the host. The show features many prominent people from the areas of art, history, acting, and scientific cultures. It also features DNA results at the end of each show. The DNA is usually just a fun add-on to most of the people especially when they are linked with other guests on the show. However, DNA has helped other people find their biological family and answer some deep family questions that they have had. So, this one is definitely worth the watch.

Who Do You Think You Are-(My Top Genealogy TV Show)

You can find this one on many TV streaming platforms such as Hulu and Amazon Prime. It’s also found on NBC, TLC, and BBC networks. This show features celebrities that go on a family history journey all over the world to find their family. At first the producers of this show had to hunt down celebrities who would be on the show. Now they have celebrities asking to be on the show. The American version of this show has had 11 seasons so far and the British version is on it’s 17th season. It’s one of the best shows that I’ve seen for genealogy. I also just love how celebrities are normal people with normal and crazy family trees.

Genetic Detective

This is a fascinating one! It only has one season so far, but they are making a season two. The show features real life cold cases that the police and government officials have asked CeCe Moore, a genetic genealogist, to help solve. She solves these cold cases by using DNA and family history to find the real suspect of these cases. This show is graphic at times and they do talk about sensitive issues such as rape and murder. So I would not recommend this one for kids. But, it’s fascinating to see how forward thinking officials and professional genetic genealogists work together to solve real crimes. CeCe Moore has also used her genetic skills on the TV show Finding Your Roots.

Long Lost Family

You will find that this show is a real tear jerker. So have some tissues handy when you watch this one. It’s all about adoptees finding their long lost biological families. It’s hosted by Lisa Joyner and Chris Jacobs. They use their reporting and interviewing skills to good use. Both of the hosts are adopted themselves so they love helping others find their family as well. But you do see the strong emotions on both sides of the family stories with this one. I was able to watch only a few of these episodes. However, it’s still a good show!

Relative Race

You can find this TV show on BYUtv. You will see that this one is a competitive one where families compete with other families to find their relatives and win the grand prize. Their living relatives give the contestants clues as to where to go next. So the producers of the show had to find all of the contestant’s relatives first and give them the clues beforehand. If you like the competition shows, then this one is for you. I love watching it when I want a faster paced one.
